The Barium Bay project plans the construction of a floating offshore wind farm for the production of electricity, meeting the needs of over 1 million households.
The Wind Farm +
•The wind farm, with a total capacity of 1,110 MW, will consist of a minimum of 61 and a maximum of 74 turbines.
• The foundations of the wind turbines are semi-submersible platforms, using the most advanced and proven technologies.
• The 66kV to 380kV transformer substations for the electricity produced by the turbines will be built offshore and installed on fixed foundations.
• The wind farm will be connected to the national grid via a new 400 kV station in the Andria area, connecting to the ‘Andria-Brindisi Sud’ and ‘Foggia-Palo del Colle’ lines. The connection to the new station will be via an underground HV cable line that will run from the sea landing point in the industrial area of Barletta through the municipalities of Barletta, Trani and Andria.
The Location +
The choice of location for the project was made taking into account several factors:
• Wind intensity
• Seabed characteristics
• Distance from the coast and minimisation of the visibility and perceptibility of the structures offshore.
• Impact on local fishing.
• Absence of environmental, military and mining constraints.
• Compatibility with main shipping routes and traffic entering and leaving ports.
The identification of the area was based on studies carried out as part of the POWERED–Project of Offshore Wind Energy: Research, Experimentation, Development, developed under the European Union’s IPA-Adriatic cross-border cooperation programme, which aims to assess the potential of the Adriatic Sea for the installation of offshore wind farms.
In particular, Barium Bay is located in an area far from the coast, to reduce the impact on the landscape and interference with human activities.

FAQ
What are the advantages of wind energy?
Wind energy is one of the main sources of renewable energy that can be developed in Italy. It guarantees zero emissions during generation, directly reducing the environmental and health impact in the areas surrounding the wind farm when compared to a gas or coal-fired power plant. It increases energy independence thanks to greater national production.
Why an offshore wind farm?
Compared to an onshore wind farm, an offshore one can count on more constant and stronger winds, thanks in part to the absence of physical barriers that act as screens, thus ensuring greater production and efficiency. In addition, the visual and noise impacts are greatly reduced and almost eliminated due to the considerable distance of the wind turbines from the coast.
How does local fishing benefit from this?
The offshore wind farm produces two types of benefits for local fishing: it helps deter and disrupt illegal trawling activities and protects the areas closest to the coast, creating a marine protected zone with positive effects on fish stocks.
